Chapter 8. Sets > Building Blocks

Building Blocks

With two city blocks to build, let's start by building the sidewalks. Everything else is relative to them (and we know the relevant details about curbs and gutters), so in much the same way that we draw in the outlines before coloring, we'll start there.

Curbs

As I learned, curbs are typically 6 inches high and 6 inches wide, with 2-foot gutters. There are also quarter-inch radii around the expansion joints, and about a 1-inch radius at the leading edge. The joints are three quarters of an inch wide and an inch and a half deep (but often filled in with some compressible material). Because the curbs in our project will be so close to the camera (and to reduce the shading load), the expansion joints in the curbs should be modeled.
