Roughing It In

Building a complex set can seem like an almost overwhelming task. There might be dozens (perhaps even hundreds or thousands) of models to construct, each needing to properly fit into the scene and convey the necessary look. Usually each must be different from its neighbors in sometimes subtle and sometimes dramatic ways. Just getting your head around the problem can be intimidating.

Fortunately, we humans are logical thinkers. We can look at our problems from a variety of perspectives to find useful patterns, and we can plan our solutions in hierarchical ways. Building a set, whether it's a room or an entire city, can be tackled top-down. To build the set required for our Parking Spot project (see Chapter 2, “Project Overview”), we'll use just such an approach.
