Chapter 6. Formats

An amazing variety of objects exists in the world around us. From the incredibly tiny parts of the dust mite to the vast galaxies of interstellar space, the objects of our world can be staggeringly different. Some things are irregular, some are symmetric, some are tremendously complex, and others are platonically simple. Manmade objects add their distinctiveness to the natural collective. But despite this enormous range of objects, computer graphics has managed to represent almost all of it using just a few mathematical formats.
