Chapter 5. MEL > What Is MEL?

What Is MEL?

MEL, otherwise known as the Maya Embedded Language, exposes a direct way to execute any command within Maya. In fact, almost all of Maya's menus and windows, as well as most of its user interface, are built using MEL. By typing the corresponding MEL commands, you can also access any command that you can access from a menu. All the MEL scripts that are being executed from the menus can also be retraced from within Maya's very own internal Script Editor. In a nutshell, MEL is the direct way to send messages that tell Maya exactly what to do. MEL lets you build logic using common control structures such as loops (to repeat or iterate over a list or array), conditions (to evaluate expressions as either true or false), and functions (otherwise known as procedures in Maya terminology).
