Chapter 19. Lighting > The World in Lights

The World in Lights

Everything we see is illuminated. A large directional light, the sun, illuminates everything naturally outdoors. Even though it's illuminated by the same light source, however, an outdoor environment can look different, and the mood it evokes can change. The season of the year and the time of day vary greatly based on atmospherics and other light properties. The latitude and longitude also affect the light outdoors. Imagine being in the Arctic Circle during the winter months, when the sun comes up for a very short while. Think of the colors you would describe to someone. Now think of a bright summer day on a late afternoon in the Tropics. How would you go about describing that? This is the problem we presented ourselves with when doing the lighting for our Parking Spot animation. The story would take place on such a summer day. The Jerk's car would block out Spot's space basking in the sun. Confrontation would ensue and the hilarity would begin. How does one go about turning this description into Attribute Editor settings for the lights?

You can find the answer to that question by knowing what you can do with Maya's lights, as well as through keen observation.
