Part: V Appendix > Advanced MEL

Advanced MEL

This section provides a somewhat more advanced breakdown of a script's functions, which are really the script's three functional algorithms. Many of you might recognize this script, called fitMorph.mel, as one of my many scripts that can be found on highend3d.com (the well-known high-end 3D software resource and community web site). Here I explain how I used many of Maya's already existing functions to solve the specific problems that I was being challenged with, using creative solutions and knowledge of Maya's behavior to write a script more efficiently, quickly, and easily.

We'll start with a perfect example of using one of Maya's built-in functions and getting the required behavior from it every time, with no chance that something might go wrong. Your script will be guaranteed to work properly. In most cases, the software architects of Maya have put much more effort into ensuring that things will work together appropriately—more effort than a single MEL scripter can afford to invest. So, the moral is: Use the built-in functionality of Maya to solve your problems. Make sure you investigate the “best” way to solve a problem that will require the least amount of code. Never reinvent the wheel.
