Surfacing Decisions

With the preceding points of comparison in mind, let's apply some decision making to some models from the Parking Spot production.

From the outset, we should say that few objects will be candidates for polygonal modeling, at least as a final solution. Our goal is to produce a short film relatively free of CG artifacts, of which nickeling is among the most egregious. NURBS surfaces will still have to be carefully tessellated, but they can be adjusted during the rendering phase, whereas polymeshes will be substantially harder to smooth over. Polygonal modeling will surely help along the way, but it probably won't be the final form for too much of anything.
