Polygons

The use of polygons for modeling objects was largely driven by early demands for simplicity and ease of computation. Detail could be specified to satisfy downstream rendering and data storage needs by limiting the number and arrangement of interconnected polygons. Although this almost always results in approximations for objects rather than models that are completely faithful to the designs, these approximations could be controlled directly by the users of CG systems.

Modern uses of polygon-based modeling still carry forward these characteristics but are freed from many of the limitations that first brought about the format. Maya offers a sophisticated set of polygon tools, enabling users to create and edit highly complex models.
