Chapter 10. Organic Modeling > Building the Mouth

Building the Mouth

The other main area of detail on the face is, of course, the mouth, which is what you’ll be moving on to next. You’ll start in a way similar to the eyelids—quickly building a suitable cage structure, and then carefully molding the resulting SubPatch surface into shape. As you can see, a few key tools can help you build just about anything! Too often, LightWave animators think there is some hidden secret to making great models such as the one in this chapter. Instead, you’re learning that with the right references, proper point placement, and a little time, you can create a great-looking model.

Like the eyelids, the mouth area also is basically a circular ring of muscles. However, when modeling the lips, the difference in thickness (the side profile) along the length of each lip is much more pronounced than in the eyelids, so it’s easier to start building them from the side first rather than the front.
