The face has been the most favored subject of artists—professional, budding, or otherwise—throughout history, and it’s no different in today’s world of 3D computer graphics. The reasons for this are fairly obvious. You are surrounded by people’s faces every day of your life, and they are your primary means of communicating and showing your feelings—happy or sad, angry or serene. As such, people tend to be fascinated by looking at faces.
Ironically, it is this kind of ubiquitous interest and familiarity that makes re-creating faces realistically one of the hardest tasks for any artist, digital or otherwise. Everyone is an expert on the face, and everyone will sense when you’ve gotten it wrong.
