Chapter 4. LightWave 7 Layout > Spreadsheet Scene Manager

Spreadsheet Scene Manager

New to LightWave 7 is the Spreadsheet Scene Manager. Imagine if you took the Scene Editor and pumped it with steroids—you’d have this new monstrous scene control panel. Figure 4.35 shows a scene loaded and viewed through the Spreadsheet Scene Manager.

Figure 4.35. LightWave 7’s Spreadsheet Scene Manager takes your scene control to the next level.

This panel of controls is quite extensive and will be covered more in Appendix A, “Motion Capture and LightWave.” In it, you can choose how to view your scene, taking a look at what’s loaded in alphabetical order, reverse order, and more. You can look at the properties for every single item in your scene, view channel values, look at file locations and polygon sizes, see which lights have what types of shadows, and so much more. You can even set up automated tasks, such as opening the Graph Editor after applying envelopes.

Using a dual-monitor setup is ideal for this control panel. You can keep it open and use it to select items, and even set light colors. The best way to learn this new tool is by using it, so we’ve implemented it into a few tutorials in the book. Keep an eye out for it!
