Project Overview

Basic lighting can add warmth to or cool off your animations. It can improve your animations. But you need to be aware of some basic real-world principles before you can put it all together. This chapter instructs you on these topics:

  • Basic lighting principles

  • Using LightWave’s Global Illumination

  • Using different light sources

  • Animating lights

  • Adding atmospheres

Before you begin working through lighting setups in this chapter and throughout this book, you should be aware of the types of lights LightWave has to offer as well as their uses. At the top of the Layout interface is the Lights tab, from which you can access all the lighting properties listed in this chapter.

Lighting for Animation

The great thing about LightWave is that its lights work in a fashion similar to lights in the real world. They aren’t exact duplicates of real-world lights, but with a few settings and adjustments, you can make any light appear realistic.
