Chapter 13. Inverse Kinematics > Configuring the IK Chains

Configuring the IK Chains

After you’ve created and placed the goal objects, you need to set up the IK chains. The motorcross racer makes full use of LightWave’s hybrid IK engine, and because of this you can pose the legs with both IK and FK. Even with this basic IK setup in the legs, you are given much control over the character.

The process of configuring a character for IK is made easier by leaving the Motion Options Panel and Spreadsheet open. By keeping either of them open, you can work with various parts of the character, and set up the IK accordingly without constantly opening and closing the Motion Options panel. Seeing which objects and/or bones you’re working with while assigning IK and seeing the IK effect while you work is essential to your productivity.
