Chapter 13. Inverse Kinematics > Introduction to Character Setup

Introduction to Character Setup

The proper setup of a character is the most important step to an enjoyable experience in character animation. If you overlook something in the initial stages of setup, you might have hell to pay later when animating the character.

Setting up a character is often called rigging. Rigging is basically the process of configuring a character with animation controls. These controls can be based on FK, IK, or a combination of both. The next few sections of this chapter focus on the rigging of a human-like skeletal structure and guide you through the process of setting up the animation controls.
