Chapter 13. Inverse Kinematics

Character animation has long been the veritable Holy Grail of 3D animation. Until recently, only an elite few could do it, and those who were good at it were often of the programmer-type personality and in high demand.

Reaching a competitive level of character animation required expensive software running on even more expensive workstations. With today’s advances in technology, however, more and more of these high-end tools are becoming available to the general public. LightWave offers character animation tools that not only rival those of the big boys, but also surpass them on many levels. One such tool is the hybrid kinematics engine for character setup and animation. Figure 13.1 is a character rigged with LightWave’s hybrid kinematics. You’ll set up the rigging for this character later in this chapter.
