Texturing

After a model is completed, and often during the modeling process itself, the model needs to be textured. Texturing is a two-step process of texture mapping and texture creation.

Texture mapping is the process of applying mapping coordinates to the model. In other words, this is how the texture will be “wrapped” around the model. Texture creation is the process of creating the texture, either from scratch or by piecing together existing elements in a program such as Adobe Photoshop. Often the texture creator, or “skinner,” doesn’t alter the model. He uses the model to view the texture that he is working on, but he doesn’t actually apply the mapping coordinates himself. On the other hand, some artists will do the whole process themselves, without the assistance of another artist.
