Game Artist’s Workflow

Many steps are involved in the typical workflow of game production. Depending on the team and the situation, the workflow might be a predefined guideline or might be more free flow and open to change. Whichever method is used, most artists will follow some generic steps.

Concept/Brainstorming

In the first stage, ideas are brought to the table, concepts are drawn, and some models are made. Brainstorming sessions and concept creation determines the look and feel of the game. Artists might work closely with designers to understand the game concept, which then helps them develop an art feel that matches the game design. The conceptual process can go in so many ways: It can be a very free-form process, or it can be a rigid process that takes several weeks or months to develop certain art guidelines for the game.
