Chapter 10. Organic/Character Modeling U... > The Advantages of Box Modeling

The Advantages of Box Modeling

Box modeling is a polygonal modeling technique that uses a low-resolution model referenced to a higher-resolution model that can be interactively edited in real time. Traditionally, Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) was the preferred modeling method for high-resolution models because their resolution could be increased or decreased depending on what mesh resolution was needed. NURBS is a parametric surface. Box modeling enables the user to increase the resolution of a polygonal object.

The box-modeling technique, which has been available since Max 2.0, offers several advantages over other modeling techniques. Before box modeling was available, high-resolution polygonal modeling was extremely laborious and changes were neither quick nor easy to do. Making morph targets for facial animation was also very time-consuming. Box modeling enables you to make such adjustments quickly.
