Chapter 4. Changes in Rendering > Enhanced Network Rendering

Enhanced Network Rendering

3ds max has always had very strong built-in network-rendering capabilities, and, in this latest version, it has been rewritten to allow greater flexibility and speed. Users are urged to read the network-rendering documentation provided in the printed and online manuals for a more complete explanation of a network rendering setup. This book covers only significant changes in functionality and workflow, and assumes a basic level of understanding regarding TCP/IP networks.

In its simplest form, network rendering is comprised of two components: a Manager and a Server. The Manager distributes the rendering tasks to the Server, which does the actual rendering. A computer is designated Manager or Server, or, in some cases, both, by launching either the Managerapp.exe or Serverapp.exe programs, located in the root 3DSMax4 directory by default. For users who want to run these programs as services under Windows NT/2000, services versions of these programs have been provided.
