Chapter 3. Changes in Animation > Character Animation Overview

Character Animation Overview

Perhaps the most noticeable area of improvement in 3ds max 4 is in its character-animation tools. This is especially true for its bone and IK systems, which have been totally rewritten from the ground up in this release.

As a quick overview, essentially three tools are commonly used to set up or rig a character model for animation. The first is the bone system, which is used to create a skeleton for the character. The second is a combination of inverse kinematics (IK) and forward kinematics (FK) chains that the animator will interact with to drive the motion of the bones. Last is the skinning tool, also known as enveloping, which gives the user control over how the character model will deform to follow the motion of the bones.
