Chapter 20. Animation Techniques > Animating Is Practicing

Animating Is Practicing

Before you get into the details of this project, here are a few tips for experienced modelers who are just getting their feet wet in the art of animation. Animation is not something that can be explained easily in a manual. In fact, the only way that you can become a good animator is by constantly practicing.

The best way to practice is not to go straight into character animation. Start by animating simple things. Try animating inanimate objects and give them life. A good place to start would be with different types of balls—basketballs, tennis balls, golf balls, or bowling balls. Start by animating them rolling down the stairs or bouncing, and see if you can mimic the weight of each type of ball. If a person can recognize by the motion of the ball what type of ball it is, you have done a good job animating it.
