Joint Experts Photographic Group (JPEG)

The acronym JPEG (pronounced jay-peg) stands for Joint Experts Photographic Group, the name of the organization that originally wrote the compression algorithm for this file type. JPEGs are extremely efficient at compressing a variety of designs.

JPEG Compression

Unlike GIF, which uses lossless compression and a limited color palette, JPEG uses lossy compression and 24-bit color (millions of colors). JPEG compression removes what it considers irrelevant data from the file to compress the data. Although this loss in data is sometimes invisible to the naked eye, there are instances when the compression is noticeable. As with GIFs, your understanding of which images are suitable for optimization with the JPEG format helps ensure the end quality of the graphics you save to this format.
