Graphic Interchange Format (GIF)

GIF (pronounced either giff or jiff) is the Graphic Interchange Format. It was developed in the late 1980s for CompuServe, a proprietary online computer service. GIF is the oldest supported file format on the Web. GIFs are extremely popular because they are small and have considerable functionality, such as animation, interlacing, and transparency capabilities.

Understanding GIF Compression

GIFs use a method of compression known as lossless. This means that after the file goes through the first round of compression, in which the color table is limited to 256 colors or less, the file can be repeatedly saved without reduction of quality. So even though the file is compressed, it ideally does not lose any quality in the resulting image.
