Chapter 5. Skinning > Weighting on Multiple Bones

Weighting on Multiple Bones

The hips and shoulders are the most difficult parts of a character to skin correctly. Each part of the hip is affected by both the spine and at least one thigh bone. Some vertices, such as those at the center of the hips, are affected by both thigh bones as well as the spine. You also have the added challenge here of a T-shirt that hangs below the waist.

You might be tempted to weight one side and use Mirror Mode to pass the settings to the other side. But because most parts of the hips are affected by both thigh bones, this isn't a very useful solution.
