Smoothing Groups

You may have noticed something about this spherified box—in a shaded view, you can clearly see the edges of the original box. This is due to something called smoothing groups.

When an object is created, each face is assigned one or more smoothing group numbers. When the object is shaded or rendered, 3ds max compares each face's smoothing group number against the adjacent faces' numbers.
