Chapter 2. Modeling the Head > The Spherify Modifier

The Spherify Modifier

You might think that facial modeling would start with a sphere. However, I've found that the arrangement of faces on a sphere is not the best for face models. A box works much better. We'll apply the Spherify modifier to the box to form it into a spherical shape, then smooth the box's edges and mold the object into a head shape.

TUTORIAL M19: Creating the Head

1.
Reset 3ds max, saving any changes to the body that you have recently made.

2.
In the Top viewport, create a box of any size.

3.
Go to the Modify panel.

4.
Change the parameters to the following:

Length70
Width70
Height70
Length Segs4
Width Segs6
Height Segs5

Figuring out how many segments to put on a box for a low-poly model requires a bit of guesswork. I settled on this arrangement by trial and error.

5.
Apply the Spherify modifier to the box.

The box is now shaped like a sphere.

6.
Right-click the Spherify listing on the modifier stack and choose Collapse All from the pop-up menu. If a message appears asking to you confirm that you want to collapse, click Yes.

The model is collapsed to an Editable Mesh.

7.
Right-click the Editable Mesh listing and choose Convert to Editable Poly.

Now you have a sphere-shaped box converted to an Editable Poly, and ready to be shaped into a head.

8.
Save the scene as LPHead01.max.
