Creating and Assigning a Multi/Sub-Object Material

Normally in 3ds max 7, if you apply a material to an object in a scene that already has a material on it, the original material will be replaced because you can only have one material per object.

There is a special material, however, called Multi/Sub-Object, that is comprised of one or more sub-materials. By default, the order of the sub-materials in the Material Editor corresponds to the Material ID numbers you've assigned or have been automatically assigned to faces of an object.
