Key Terms

  • Diffuse color swatch. The rectangle of color in the Material Editor that lets you adjust the color of a material in direct light.

  • Ambient color swatch. The rectangle of color in the Material Editor that lets you adjust the color of a material in the shade.

  • Ambient lighting color. This environment setting must be raised from the default 0 value to see any effects of the ambient color of a material in scanline rendering.

  • Color Selector. This dialog lets you mix the primary hues and adjust the whiteness and blackness, as well as the brightness and gray levels of basic material colors.

  • Specular level. This setting controls the brightness of specular highlights.

  • Glossiness. Adjusting this setting changes the size of specular highlights.

  • Shader type. A component of a material that adjusts the shape of specular highlights.

  • Standard material type. The default material type in the Material Editor in 3ds max 7.

  • Multi/Sub-Object material type. A special material type that lets you apply more than one material to a single object.

  • Material ID numbers. Numbers that are applied to faces or polygons in a 3D object to control Multi/Sub-Object material assignments.
