Using Modifiers to Add Detail to 3D Objects

In Exercise 8.1, you'll practice tessellating surfaces using an HSDS modifier at the sub-object level. Once you have increased the localized detail in the model with the HSDS modifier, you'll use the Paint Deformation option of the Edit Poly modifier to create hills in the landscape containing the extra vertices generated by the tessellation.

Another method of adding detail to 3D objects is to use displacement mapping. In Exercise 8.2, you'll create a streambed using the Displace Mesh modifier and grayscale displacement maps in materials to automatically tessellate surfaces based on the luminance value (the whiteness) of the pixels in a map. Then you'll learn to utilize options in the Displace Mesh modifier to limit the number of new faces while maintaining the visual detail.
