Procedural Maps

Many of the patterns found in materials in the natural world, such as grass, dirt, or cloudy skies, or in the world of the man-made, such as the surface of rusty metal, are random. These patterns might be the color variations of a material, the roughness of its surfaces, or perhaps the changes in the shininess of its surface. 3ds max 7 ships with maps, known as procedural maps, that generate different types of patterns. These include Noise, Smoke, or Dent, to name a few, which can be used to simulate those random occurrences in nature. Other procedural maps, like Falloff and Tiles, have more specific controls and are less random. For example, Falloff maps use the direction of face normals on surfaces to determine where the pattern gets applied, and Tiles maps form a controlled pattern of rectangular tiles.
