Lighting a 3D scene is just as important as, if not more important than, modeling. Newer users of 3ds max 7 often struggle with this concept, and end up spending too much time modeling their 3D scenes and not enough time lighting them. This is a major reason why they can end up with mediocre results in their rendered images.

In particular, newer users in engineering and architecture fields are more inclined to spend too much time creating unnecessary details in their models. Then when they add lighting, they suffer from slow production, primarily because of the overhead of their shadow calculations.
