Keyframe Basics

Keyframe animation, using the Auto Key function, is quite straightforward and easy to use. You click the Auto Key button to turn the function on, move the Frame slider at the bottom of the display to any frame other than Frame 0, and change almost any parameter in the scene. A key will be created at Frame 0 and at the frame where you made the parameter change. The farther apart the keys are spaced, the slower the action because the amount of spacing represents more time.

By default, 3ds max 7 contains 100 frames of animation. The playback rate for animation in the USA is 30 frames per second, which equates to a length of 3.3 seconds of animation. You can adjust the animation length in the Time Configuration dialog, but for our purposes here, 100 frames is fine.
