Summary

This chapter presented several important concepts:

  • The reference coordinate systems in 3ds max 7. These include View, Screen, and Local. Without a fundamental understanding of the them, particularly of Local, you'll have a difficult time navigating through 3D space, transforming objects in scenes, and taking full advantage of the alignment tools available in the program.

  • Layers. A management tool that lets you manipulate objects as a group to transform them as one entity, or to change properties such as object visibility or radiosity rendering parameters.

  • Lofting. A relatively straightforward modeling technique that requires a fundamental understanding of underlying concepts before you can use it efficiently. These concepts include the orientation of shapes and paths, the first vertex, and path and shape steps. While you hopefully had a chance to experiment with lofting in this chapter, the information presented here serves to set the stage for the indepth lofting practice you'll do in Chapter 5, Lofting: Control Is Everything.
