Chapter 20. Effects: Making It Special > The When and Why of Special Effects

The When and Why of Special Effects

One important fact to keep in mind while you are learning the topics covered in this chapter is that special effects are just that—special. You should use these techniques only when they add content to the story you are trying to tell. Don't use them just because they're available in 3ds max 7 or because they look “cool.”

The steam simulation and the 3D clouds you'll create in this chapter can use considerable computer resources if you are not careful with the parameters. For example, having the density set too high for both effects can slow your productivity, draw too much attention to the effect, and detract from the story you are trying to tell.
