Key Terms

  • Focal length. As it relates to the traditional camera, focal length describes the distance from the lens to the film plane, measured in millimeters. However, with cameras in 3ds max, the term is used differently. It describes whether a wide angle or telephoto lens has been used to control perspective and only simulates the effect of focal length adjustments in a real camera.

  • Field of view. By default, the horizontal width of the camera view, expressed in degrees.

  • Cut edit. A sudden change from one scene to the next, used in traditional film and television animations.

  • Fade or dissolve edit. A slower transition from one animated scene to another, used to convey the passage of time or distance.
