Using Masks and Keys

Sometimes a subject is shot against a blue or green background; the filmer’s intention is to later remove the background to composite the subject into a different scene. The process of removing the background is called creating a key, pulling a key, or just keying.

To create a convincing key, you need a properly lit shot to begin with, coupled with the skillful and patient application and adjustment of filters. Motion includes several filters in the Key and Matte categories to help you create a clean key. By combining these filters with masks, you can produce a convincing key.
