Creating a Garbage Matte

No doubt you've noticed that at the beginning and end of our clip, the “studio” (all right, the computer lab) in which the shoot took place is visible. Obviously, the lab isn't supposed to be in the shot, so we need to remove it, leaving just the woman in the center and the cityscape behind her. To remove the lab from the composite, we'll create what's called a garbage matte. Garbage mattes are used to cut away the unwanted “garbage” from a shot.
