About Spline IK

Spline IK provides a way of controlling many joints using a curve instead of having to rotate them directly. It is especially useful when there are many joints in a continuous chain, as in a spine or a tail. You can quickly move the skeleton into a shape you want without having to rotate each individual joint (Figure 9.28).

Figure 9.28. By creating a IK spline on these joints, this animation of a spine skeleton can be done by moving just one point. Keyframing the rotation of each joint to achieve the same effect would be much more difficult.
