About Texturing Polygons

Anything covered in the chapter so far would work on a polygon primitive. However, these techniques would not necessarily work on a polygon surface that you modeled. NURBS surfaces are always four-sided, but polygon surfaces are made up of many small faces. So the way a texture gets mapped on polygon surfaces is not as simple as it is on NURBS surfaces.

Think of a wrapped present. Imagine carefully removing the wrapping paper and flattening it out. Once it is flattened out, you could easily paint a new image on it (Figure 13.61).
