Chapter 7. NURBS Curves and Surfaces

NURBS curves and surfaces can be used to create nearly any object—a medieval knight, a detailed car, an alien, or any object you can imagine. NURBS surfaces can be highly organic, characterized by sinuous, rounded shapes. This makes them great for creating trees, faces, or streamlined vehicles.

NURBS curve creation should come quite naturally to anyone who has used other software programs with Bézier curves, like Adobe Illustrator. Although NURBS curves are different than Bézier curves, they are created and edited similarly. NURBS curves can be used to outline surfaces, which speeds object creation, and they can also be helpful editing tools after a surface has been created (Figure 7.1).
