About Polygons

Polygon meshes are surfaces that give the user a lot of flexibility in modeling because they can be used to produce high-quality, smooth surfaces, as well as low-resolution, fast-rendering surfaces. Games require a small amount of polygons per surface (low-poly models) in order for the game engine to render them on the fly. As a result, polygons are the choice for game and Internet developers. A good modeler can create a good-looking, fast-loading model with only a few well-placed polygons (Figure 3.32).

Figure 3.32. A low polygon model renders fast and can be developed quickly (model by Andrew Britt).
