Selecting Objects

The most basic way to select objects is by clicking them. When you select an object by clicking, other objects become deselected, unless you hold down the Ctrl key at the same time.

To select an object by clicking:

1.
Choose Select Object from the Main Toolbar, if it is not already in use.

2.
Move the cursor over an object.

3.
Click an object.

The object is selected, replacing the previous selection (Figure 4.2).

To add an object to a selection:

1.
Choose the Select Object tool.

2.
Hold down the Ctrl key, and click on an object.

The object is added to the current selection (Figure 4.3).

3.
Repeat step 2 until you have selected all the objects you want.

To subtract an object from a selection:

1.
Choose the Select Object tool.

2.
Hold down the Alt key, and click on an object.

The object is subtracted from the current selection (Figure 4.4).

3.
Repeat step 2 until you have deselected all the objects you want to subtract from the selection.

To deselect all objects:

1.
Choose the Select Object tool.

2.
Click the background of one of the viewports (Figure 4.5).

All of the objects become deselected.

Locking a selection prevents objects from being deselected accidentally.

To lock a selection:

1.
Make a selection.

2.
Click the Selection Lock Toggle in the Status Bar, Locks and Controls area.

or

Press the spacebar.

The objects stay selected, no matter where else you click in the viewports.

To unlock a selection:

  • Click the Selection Lock Toggle in the Status Bar Locks and Controls area.

    or

    Press the spacebar.

    Now the objects can be deselected.

Inverting deselects the current selection of objects, and selects everything else in the scene.

To invert a selection:

1.
Make a selection (Figure 4.6).

2.
Choose Edit > Select Invert.

The selection is inverted so that everything except the objects you selected in step 1 are now selected (Figure 4.7).
