Using Material Libraries

3ds max 4 ships with 15 different libraries of materials and maps. They are categorized by content, such as Wood, Brick, Stones, Sky, Ground, Metal, Space, and Backgrounds. The default material library that appears when you first open the browser is called 3dsmax.mat. All material libraries have this .mat extension.

To open a material library:

1.
Open the Material/Map Browser .

Click the Mtl Library radio button.

The maps and materials in the current material library are displayed in the window on the right. On the left, the File group appears in the list of browsing commands (Figure 13.28).

In the File group, click Open.

The Open Material Library dialog box appears. It displays the material libraries in the 3dsmax 4\matlibs folder (Figure 13.29).

Select a library and click Open.

The material library opens (Figure 13.30).
