Chapter 10. Compound Objects

Compound objects combine two or more objects into one. They greatly assist complex modeling operations and facilitate certain animation techniques, such as 3D morphing. 3 ds max 4 ships with nine types of compound objects: Boolean, Connect, Scatter, ShapeMerge, Terrain, Conform, Loft, Morph, and Mesher.

Compound objects combine some of the best characteristics of modifiers and arrays. With compound objects, you can deform, cut, join, remove, and extrude surfaces. You can create ordered or random arrays of clones. You can also create surface terrain models from contour lines (Figure 10.1).
