Using alpha channels

Here's a theoretical dilemma. You've got a picture of a cow with a landscape behind it that you created in Photoshop. You want to drop the original background out so you can place the cow on top of a textured or solid-colored background in your LiveMotion composition. Who you gonna call?

Nobody. Select the cow, save the selection as an alpha channel, save the file, then place the image in LiveMotion. (Does "alpha channel" sound like something from Star Trek? Sorry to disappoint. It's just a grayscale channel that's used for saving selections and creating transparency.) Finally, choose Use Alpha Channel from the Properties palette. LiveMotion will drop out the landscape using the image's alpha channel.
