Case Study: Corporate Intranet

Yvonne is the training manager for her company. She decides to put video clips on the intranet Web site so that employees can view videos of important safety procedures. Because the company has a high-speed 100-T Ethernet network and digital connections to its satellite offices, she determines that she can safely use streaming QuickTime video clips with a data rate of 180 Kbps. But she also knows that some users will log into the site by using dial-up connections and that this high-data-rate video will take far too long for them to download. She decides to use QuickTime 3.0, which supports movies of multiple data rates and automatically delivers the appropriate movie, depending on the user's connection.

The training videos are shot with a digital video camera and are stored on DV-format tapes. Yvonne uses her FireWire interface card to copy the video to her Mac's hard drive. She uses Radius' EditDV to edit and save the clips in QuickTime format. She then uses Terran Interactive's MediaCleaner Pro to recompress the movies with a maximum data rate of 180 Kbps, making sure to save them with a poster frame, which will be the first thing that users see on the Web site. In the same step, she sets MediaCleaner Pro to save a second copy of each clip, highly compressed with the ClearVideo codec and with a reduced frame size, to play at data rate of only 10 Kbps.
