Chapter 14. Java and DHTML

Java is the platform-independent programming language developed by Sun Micro systems and now widely accepted as a standard way of delivering browser-dependent applications, or applets, on the Web. Although Java has a limitless number of applications and uses, I concentrate in this chapter exclusively on how it can be used to create animation on the Web.

Java is not, by any stretch of the imagination, designed to be a multimedia or animation language. It contains only a few features that are specifically designed to facilitate animation, and its performance depends on many factors that limit its effectiveness as an animation environment.
